The additional photos I promised
I wanted to post a quick note to everyone pointing out that the additional photos from the recording session with the great Jessye Norman are now available at the HEARTbeats website. In addition to seeing Jessye and more of the recording crew, I enjoyed composing a short introduction for the photo gallery that truly sums up my feelings about the session and how much I admire Jessye.
Last Thanksgiving was, for me, the most thankful of my career as I spent it recording a beautiful spiritual with the legendary Jessye Norman. Jessye personally wrote this arrangement for the loneliness of a solo cello plus voice and what an experience it was! It is a tender and simple song but with an artist like Jessye, it became a symphony of expression, history, love, regret, and bewilderment. It is a marvelous work and an equally special gift to our album and the foundation. Welcome to my blog. I am a 67 year old solo cellist who has been touring the world for the last 40 years playing almost everywhere of note in the classical music scene alongside many of the greatest musicians. Over all these years, I have accumulated many stories, opinions, and insights, and gifts of the spirit as well as objects. It has been and still is incredibly inspiring work and even though I consider myself “techno-challenged” I wanted to have an outlet to share everything.

Your playing has always brought me much joy, ever since hearing you at a Jeunesses Musicales sponsored recital at the Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, School for the Blind when you were, I believe, 19 years old! (I still have the programme!!)I also remember with much happiness your participation over several years in the Scotia Festivel (masterclasses (ex. on the marvellous the Prokofiev sonata) and memorable chamber music recitals with the late John Browning and the Walter Trampler! Much more recently your fine Perimeter Institute recital in Waterloo, Ontario, was one of the highlights of that season (or of any season!) Thank you for enriching the lives of so may over so many years! And may your art continue to inspire and fulfil us for many years to come.
I applaud the wonderfully altruistic intitiative that you and your wife have embarked upon!

I’m very sorry to have missed you in Seattle; the “gods” that schedule childre’s events, and the other “gods” that control when the ferry system is being repaired, conspired against is. I will try to keep track of your scheduled so that, if you stop by this way, again, we can perhaps connect: me for the music, and you (and Helen?) for the stirfry.

Dear Mr. Harrell,
I love the standard of artistry that you portray in your playing. Even though I am a student violinist, I don’t think it would be too daring for me to say that you are an iconic figure in the world of string music that will never be replaced. It must have been a dream to work with Ms. Norman, as she is also quite a gem and marvelous artiste. It is a hope of mine to see you perform live in concert one day.
